A deeply satisfying dish that’s perfect for your next brunch, lunch, or dinner. It’s a mash-up of two of my favorite local Hawai‘i dishes loco moco and katsu. Loco moco is typically made with a beef patty and brown gravy, topped with a signature sunny-side-up fried egg, and served over a mound of steamed white rice.
In my home, oyakodon screams comfort. On especially cool nights or after a long day, this is a dish I turn to.
Literally translated as “parent-and-child donburi (rice bowl)”, oyakodon is typically made with chicken (the parent) and egg (the child).
Lately, I’ve felt like the days have been playing on a loop. Since we’ve been spending an unprecedented amount of time at home this year, the days are beginning to blur together. We’ve been spending a lot of time in our garden, in fact, we just started planning our fall planting.
I owe you lots of life updates. We moved to Mar Vista, which is amazing because it’s closer to the ocean (it’s just inland of Venice Beach). I’ve been showing you around via IG stories but I *promise* to do some room by room tours here on the blog soon. My cookbook is in its final stages (eeepppp!!!)—we’re about to go to the printers and I have an official cover and publication date!
If it feels like I’ve been a little radio silent or off in my world, it’s because I have. It’s called cookbook land, and I’ve been living, breathing, and subsequently eating all things Hawai‘i. And I’m loving the whole process, but it’s a touch all-consuming...
As the days grow shorter, and my daily workload bulks up, I feel the rapid end of summer flowing into the ever so swift start of fall. And as much as I bemoaned the heat, I’m already pining for those long summer days. However, the silver lining in all this change...
Remember when Moses and I went to Verona at the end of March this year? Well, we’re long overdue for our recap. I guess you could say life’s been a little crazy as of late. Between my new cookbook deal, tons of Spring visitors, friend’s cookbooks being launched out into the world...
This past weekend was so lovely. It was quiet and peaceful and very productive. Moses left town for a quick business trip to Oahu, so Vienna and I decided to hole up in the coziest corner of our apartment and spend the weekend writing.
It’s back to reality for me. After almost two weeks in Hawaii, filled with lots of book research (ok, fine, eating), I’m back in Los Angeles. It feels so good to be back in my kitchen. Apart from the lemon meringue pie I baked for my grandma’s birthday...
Is it a faux pas to talk about what you did on Valentine's Day? If it is, I'm sorry in advance. I'm pretty sure this Vday was my all-time favorite. Not because it was fancy, or present-filled, as it was neither. Instead, it was simple and cozy and perfectly us.
I never thought I'd be talking about my heritage in this space, but here I go. I am fourth generation Japanese-American, and I am also eleventh or twelfth or maybe even thirteenth generation Danish/Irish/German/and other Northwestern European.
I’ve come to realize that snapping out of vacay mode is v v hard. We returned to LA from our annual trek home to Maui and Oahu, where we stayed away from the interwebs and social media as much as possible. While we were in Maui...
So far, this week's jam has been: Christmas lights on first thing, plaid pajamas till noon, Christmas music (Moses is still indulging me), and all the cozy things. Like socks and hot cocoa and matcha lattes and soups. Also, pumpkin pie and ice cream in the middle of the day just because.
Midweek wins: holly and pine trimmings have been picked up and placed in the perfect spots (by Moses) in our apartment, all of Moses' birthday presents are ordered and should be delivered before his birthday on Saturday (fingers crossed)...
When one of your favorite bloggers has a baby, it's pretty much mandatory that you throw her a *ahem* virtual shower. Sweet Cynthia of Two Red Bowls welcomed her little bundle of joy, Luke Samuel McTernan, aka B3, a little earlier than anticipated...
The days are starting to fly by a little too quickly. We're up way up here in Copenhagen and currently contemplating extending our trip. If it wasn't for my intense desire to see Vienna, I think it'd be a no brainer. But it's been almost a month since we've seen...
It's weird to think that our trip to Oahu was over a month ago, before the world Pokemon Go. Tim Duncan was still on the Spurs and Snapchat was the reigning cool kid app. What a difference a month can make. But can we go back to life before Pokemon Go...
Let's talk about the elephant in the room... how does everyone feel about Kevin Durant becoming a Warrior? Are you pumped for Golden State, crushed for the Thunder, or bummed that he didn't go to your team (like, ahhhhem, the Spurs)?
This month really crept up on me fast. Tomorrow I'm headed to Boston then Martha's Vineyard to assist at Betty and Meg's workshop (so excited!!!) and then the following week, I'm headed back to Oahu for a dear friend's wedding.
