Ume Sour

And it's finally (Pau Hana) Friday!! Hope everyone had a wonderful week and since I know you're counting down the hours 'til you can dig into your first drink, I thought I'd send this one your way. You know what's good? A whiskey sour. Even better maybe, a bourbon sour. Better than both of those? An ume sour!! That's right. The sweet and salty heaven of umeboshi (Japanese salted/pickled plums) is added to one of my favorite sour bevies and served up for your enjoyment.

There is an awesome company, based in LA, called Miracle Mile Bitters, that is making every type of bitters that your heart could desire like chocolate-chili, yuzu, sour cherry, toasted pecan, and yes, ume bitters. They are all small batch, many limited runs, and all handcrafted in LA. Their ume bitters can be purchased at Barkeeper Silver Lake and Umami Mart and can be purchased via phone if you can't make it to Silver Lake or Oakland. Barkeeper recommends pairing the ume bitters with gin or pisco but I think they go great with a light and sweet bourbon (everything goes with bourbon). I highly recommend you check out all of the bitters Miracle Mile offers; there are some really special concoctions being mixed up!! Regarding the ume bitters, if you can't find it, feel free to go ahead and follow this recipe to make a simple bourbon sour. You can add an egg white, follow as is, or add the bitters of your choice and create your own sour!
